How to Apply Boat Registration Numbers and Name Decals

Measure twice, clean the hull and apply the decal slowly. Here is a plain step by step for vinyl boat numbers and names.

Applying vinyl boat numbers is the same careful job as applying any outdoor vinyl: a clean surface, straight placement and slow, firm pressure. This page is a general guide. The film maker's own instructions come first, and 3M publishes an application bulletin for watercraft with a pre-installation check. Read it for the film you use.

Before you start

  • Know the number and the rule. Read your state's rule and the federal summary before you place anything. Check where the validation decal goes so you leave room.
  • Check the size. Lay the decal or a paper copy on the hull. The number must be on each side of the forward half in plain block letters at least 3 inches tall.

Steps

  1. Clean. Wash the area, remove wax and polish and let it dry fully. Use a cleaner the film maker allows.
  2. Mark. Use masking tape to mark a straight line and the left and right ends. Step back and look from the dock before you commit.
  3. Hinge. Tape the decal along the top edge on the line, so it hangs like a hinge.
  4. Peel and apply. Lift the decal, peel the backing down to the tape, and press the exposed vinyl from the center outward with a squeegee or a plastic card.
  5. Finish. Remove the tape, peel the transfer sheet slowly at a low angle and press the edges down again.
  6. Check. Look for bubbles and lifted edges and press them down. Check the spacing between the letter group and the number group.

After

  • Let the film settle before washing hard or pressure washing, as the film maker advises.
  • Replace a decal that lifts or fades so the number stays readable.
  • On a state-numbered boat, add the validation decal where your state says.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply boat numbers in the rain or cold?

Follow the film maker's temperature range and apply on a dry surface. Water under the film causes bubbles and weak adhesion. Wait for a dry day and let the hull dry fully first.

How do I keep the letters straight?

Mark a level line with masking tape at the bottom of the letters, tape the top of the decal in place as a hinge and step back to check from the dock before you press it down. Use a level or measure from the gunwale.

What do I clean the hull with?

Use a cleaner the film maker allows, then wipe it dry. Wax, polish and silicone leave a film that stops the adhesive, so remove them from the area first.

How do I remove bubbles?

Press them toward the edge with a squeegee or plastic card. If one stays, a small pin hole at the edge and firm pressure usually lets the air out.

When can I wash the boat?

Let the film settle before hard washing or pressure washing. The film maker's bulletin gives the wait time, so check it for the film you use.

How do I take an old number off?

Warm the film gently with a heat gun on low, lift a corner and peel slowly at a low angle. Remove adhesive residue with a cleaner that is safe for your hull finish.

How long do boat numbers last?

It depends on the film, the sun, the surface and how you care for it. We do not give a number of years for boats, because the film makers' figures are for flat outdoor surfaces. Replace a decal that lifts or fades so the number stays readable.
