What the rules ask for

The model International Fire Code, section 505.1, asks for address numbers that contrast with their background and are at least 4 inches high with a 1/2 inch stroke, placed where they can be read from the road. Counties adopt and change these rules, so the size, color and whether the sign must be reflective or double-sided differ from place to place. Our guide to 911 address sign requirements lists what several counties ask for, with links to their own pages.

Sizes

The decal is sized to your number: four 4 inch numbers fit on a decal about 16 inches wide, the size of a common 6 x 18 inch sign blank. Five numbers, a second line or 6 inch numbers make it bigger; the page shows the exact size before you order. The vertical layout stacks the numbers for a post.

Before you order

  • Ask your county first. Some issue the sign themselves; others set the size and color.
  • Have a flat, rigid surface ready. A sign blank, a flat post face or a mailbox side. Clean it and follow the install sheet.
  • Order two for a double-sided sign. The Set of 2 costs less than two singles.

Questions about address number decals

How big should the numbers be?

The model International Fire Code asks for address numbers at least 4 inches high with a 1/2 inch stroke, in a color that contrasts with the background. Counties set their own rules on top of that: some ask for 3 inch numbers, some 4, and some 6 for apartments and businesses. Check with your county 911 or addressing office before you order.

Is this a finished sign?

No. It is a decal printed on reflective film, made to put on your own clean, flat, rigid sign blank, post or mailbox. The blank, post and hardware are not included. Some counties sell and install their own address signs, and a decal cannot replace those, so check first.

What colors should I pick?

Pick what your county asks for. The counties we read use green, blue, red or brown signs with white numbers. Whatever you choose, keep a strong contrast between the numbers and the background: the page warns you when a pair is hard to read.

Do I need two?

A sign that can be read from both directions needs a decal on each side, and some counties ask for that. Choose Set of 2 for two identical decals at a lower price than two singles.

How is the price worked out?

By the decal's longest side: $24.99 for one ($44.99 for two) up to 18 inches, and more for bigger sizes. Four 4 inch numbers fit in that first size; five need the next one. The page shows the size and the price as you type.

Is the whole decal reflective?

Yes. The whole decal, numbers and background, is printed on reflective film, so it shows up in headlights. Lighter colors reflect most.
