California Boat Registration Numbers: Size, Placement and Stickers

California boats carry a CF number on each side of the bow, the registration sticker 3 inches away and, on freshwater, a mussel fee sticker. Here are the details.

California boats carry a CF registration number on each side of the bow, with a registration sticker set a fixed distance from it and, for freshwater boats, a second sticker for the mussel fee. The California DMV publishes the rule on its page for registering a boat. This guide summarizes it in plain words and is not legal advice, so check the DMV page before you apply anything.

The number

  • It goes on each side of the bow, as block characters.
  • The DMV's wording is more than 3 inches high, a little stricter than the federal minimum of 3 inches (33 CFR 173.27), so aim for 3.5 inches or taller if you want margin.
  • The CF prefix comes first, then the number, then the letters, with a space or hyphen between the groups.
  • It contrasts with the hull and reads from left to right.

The registration sticker

  • It goes on both sides, 3 inches from your registration number.
  • The DMV asks you not to place any numbers, letters or devices near the sticker, with two exceptions: the registration number itself and the mussel fee sticker.

The mussel fee sticker

Freshwater boats show a Mussel Fee sticker next to the registration sticker. On the starboard side it sits immediately to the left of the CF number, and on the port side immediately to the right. Check the DMV page for which boats need it.

Which boats must be registered

The California Division of Boating and Waterways says a sailboat over 8 feet, or a motorized boat of any size, must be registered. Paddle craft without a motor are treated differently, so read the agency's page for your case.

Common mistakes

  • Letters exactly 3 inches, when the DMV says more than 3.
  • A sticker too close to, or too far from, the number.
  • Other lettering or decorative graphics near the sticker.
  • The mussel fee sticker on the wrong side of the number.
  • Leaving an old sticker on.

Frequently asked questions

How tall do California boat numbers have to be?

More than 3 inches, in block characters, on each side of the bow, according to the DMV. The federal rule sets 3 inches as the floor for every state.

Where does the registration sticker go?

On both sides, 3 inches from the number. Keep the sticker level with the number, and keep other numbers and lettering away from it.

What is the CF prefix?

It is the letters California uses at the start of the registration number. Type your number exactly as the state issued it.

Does a kayak need a number in California?

It depends on whether it has a motor. A motorized boat of any size must be registered, according to the Division of Boating and Waterways. For a kayak with no motor, read the agency's page.

Can I put my boat name near the number?

Keep it away. The DMV asks that no numbers, letters or devices go near the registration sticker, and the name is lettering. Place the name toward the stern or high on the side.

Does the number go on both sides?

Yes, on each side of the bow. Order two decals, one for each side. The quantity on our page starts at 2.

How do I remove an old sticker?

Warm it gently, lift a corner and peel slowly. Clean off the residue with a cleaner that is safe for your hull finish before you apply the new one.

Our boat registration number decals are made from the number you type, in block letters from 3 to 5 inches tall, and you see the decal at true size before you buy. Pick 3.5 inches or taller for California if you want to be above the "more than 3 inches" wording. The stickers come from the DMV. For the whole story see the boat registration number rules and the Florida and Texas guides.
