Jet Ski Registration Numbers: Size, Placement and Spacing

Personal watercraft carry a state registration number like any other boat. Here is the size, the placement and the spacing, and what your state may add.

A jet ski is a boat in the eyes of the law, so it carries a registration number like any other numbered boat. The federal rule that sets the size and spacing is the same one that covers a fishing boat or a runabout. The surface you have to work with is small, which is why people search for this one. This is a summary: your state's boating agency has the final say.

What the federal rule says

The Coast Guard rule for state-numbered vessels is 33 CFR 173.27. In plain words, as we read it:

  • The number goes on each side of the forward half of the vessel, painted on or permanently attached.
  • The characters are plain, vertical block letters and numbers, at least 3 inches tall.
  • The color contrasts with the background and is clearly visible and readable from left to right.
  • A space or a hyphen separates the letter group from the number group, as wide as one letter (other than "I") or one number (other than "1"). The rule's examples are "DC 5678 EF" and "DC-5678-EF".

We did not find a separate, smaller size for personal watercraft in that section. The same 3 inch minimum applies, so plan the letters to fit the bow before you buy.

The bow is small

Most jet skis have a narrow bow side, so a ten character number at 3 inches is tall and long. Measure the space first. If the number would not be easily visible on the hull or superstructure, the federal rule lets it go on a backing plate attached to the forward half, visible from each side.

What states add

The state sets where the validation decal goes. Examples we confirmed from state sources:

  • Florida: the decal goes on the port side, within 6 inches of the number, and the old year's decal comes off.
  • Texas: the decal goes in line with the number, about 3 inches toward the rear.
  • California: the decal goes on both sides, 3 inches from the number, with no other numbers or devices near it.

Other states differ. Read your own agency's page before you apply anything.

Ordering the lettering

Our boat registration number decals are made from the number you type, in plain block letters from 3 to 5 inches tall. The page shows the decal at true size on a hull section, with its width and price, so you can check it against your bow. Order two, one for each side.

Common mistakes

  • Letters under 3 inches because the bow looked small.
  • No space or hyphen between the letters and the numbers.
  • Script or italic letters instead of plain block characters.
  • Lettering on the wrong half of the craft, or only on one side.
  • Leaving last year's decal on.

Frequently asked questions

How tall do jet ski registration numbers have to be?

At least 3 inches, in plain vertical block letters and numbers, according to the federal rule for state-numbered vessels (33 CFR 173.27). California words its own page as "more than three inches", so a little extra margin is sensible. We did not find a separate smaller size for personal watercraft in the federal section.

Which side of the jet ski does the number go on?

Both sides. The federal rule asks for the number on each side of the forward half of the vessel, painted on or permanently attached. A number on one side only leaves the other side unmarked.

Can I use a script or italic font on a jet ski?

The rule asks for plain, vertical block characters, so a script or italic style does not match it, as we read the text. Pick block letters and keep them upright.

How do I space the letters and numbers?

Leave a space or a hyphen between the letter group and the number group, about as wide as one letter. The rule's examples are "DC 5678 EF" and "DC-5678-EF". The letter "I" and the number "1" are the narrow exceptions in how that width is measured.

What color should the number be?

A color that contrasts with the hull so it is clearly visible and readable. Black on a white or light hull and white on a dark hull are the usual choices. Wisconsin's agency also says two-tone and camouflage numbers are not legal there.

Where does the validation sticker go?

The state decides. Florida puts it on the port side within 6 inches of the number, Texas in line about 3 inches toward the rear, and California 3 inches from the number. Read your own state's page, and remove the old year's decal.

Is the hull identification number the same thing?

No. The HIN is stamped by the manufacturer and is a different number from the registration number your state issues. Do not alter it.

Can I order only one decal?

Yes. Most owners order two, one for each side, and the quantity on our page starts at 2. Change it to 1 if you only need one side.
