Jon Boat and Kayak Registration Numbers: Do You Need Them?

A small boat does not always need a number. It depends on the state, on whether there is a motor and on what you do with it. Here is how to find out.

People ask whether a jon boat, a kayak or a canoe needs a registration number. The honest answer is that it depends on your state and on whether the boat has a motor. This page tells you how to check and what the number looks like if you need one.

Why there is no single answer

The federal rule (33 CFR 173.27) only says how a number is displayed once your state has issued one. Whether a boat gets a number is decided by each state. As an example, California requires a sailboat over 8 feet or a motorized boat of any size to be registered. Other states set their own thresholds: we have not confirmed them state by state, so check your agency's page.

The usual questions an agency asks are:

  • Does the boat have a motor, including a small electric trolling motor?
  • How long is it?
  • Do you use it on public water?

If you do need a number

The size and style rule is the same for a small boat as for a large one, in plain words:

  • On each side of the forward half.
  • Plain block letters and numbers at least 3 inches tall, in a color that contrasts with the hull, read left to right.
  • A space or hyphen between the letter group and the number group.

On a jon boat the bow side is flat and works well. If your boat is small, measure first: a ten character number at 3 inches is long.

Not the same as the serial number

The hull identification number (HIN) is stamped by the manufacturer. Many small boats have one. It is different from the registration number your state issues, and you should never alter it.

Ordering the lettering

Our boat registration number decals are made from the number you type, in block letters from 3 to 5 inches, shown at true size before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Does a jon boat need a registration number?

It depends on your state and on whether the boat has a motor. California, for example, numbers a motorized boat of any size. Other states set their own rules, so check your state's boating agency page.

Does a kayak need a registration number?

Paddle craft are treated differently from state to state. We have not confirmed each state's rule, so check your agency's page. A kayak with a motor is more likely to need one.

How big are the numbers on a small boat?

If your boat needs a number, the same federal rule applies: plain vertical block letters at least 3 inches tall, on each side of the forward half, in a color that contrasts with the hull.

Where do they go on a jon boat?

On the bow side, which is usually flat and easy to read. Measure first: a number with ten characters at 3 inches is long.

Do I need a number if I am just fishing a pond?

Whether private water needs registration depends on your state, and we have not confirmed each state's rule. Read your agency's page.

Is the hull identification number a registration number?

No. The HIN is stamped by the manufacturer. The registration number is issued by your state. Do not alter the HIN.

Can I make my own letters?

Yes, as long as they are plain block characters 3 inches or taller in a contrasting color. Vinyl decals are a common choice. Our page shows the decal at true size before you buy.

  1. Look up your state's boating agency page and search for "registration" and the type of boat you have.
  2. Note whether a motor of any size changes the answer.
  3. If you need a number, write it down exactly as issued, with its spaces or hyphens.
  4. Measure the bow side and confirm the letters fit at 3 inches or taller.
  5. Plan where the validation decal goes before you apply the number.
  6. Keep the paperwork with the boat.

If you are unsure, ask the agency by phone or email. They answer this question every week, and a few minutes on the phone is cheaper than lettering a boat twice.
