North Carolina asks intrastate trucks over 26,000 pounds to show the owner's name and a USDOT number with the letters NC. Here is what the statute says, who it covers and how to letter it.
Many North Carolina trucks show the same marking as an interstate truck, with one addition: the letters NC. For a truck that stays inside the state, the rule asks for the owner's name and a USDOT number followed by "NC". This guide explains what the state law says, who it covers and what the lettering has to look like. It is a summary of the statute as we read it on 2026-10-13. Confirm your own truck with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol or the DMV before you order.
The rule is in North Carolina General Statute 20-101, section (b). In plain words it asks for motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds, used in intrastate commerce, to display the name of the owner and a USDOT number with the letters NC after it (N.C.G.S. 20-101). Passenger and hazardous materials vehicles are also covered by the statute.
The letters must be at least 3 inches high and must appear on both sides of the vehicle.
Trucks under 26,000 pounds GVWR that stay in the state are generally outside this rule, but check your own case. Interstate trucks use the federal marking. See how big USDOT numbers need to be for the federal text.
A typical North Carolina intrastate marking is two lines:
Letters at least 3 inches high, in a color that contrasts sharply with the background, on both sides. Our USDOT number decal lets you type your number followed by NC and pick the size and colors, and the two-line decal puts a name above the number. Check the preview, then check the spelling and digits against your paperwork.
Put the lettering on both sides of the power unit where it is easy to read, such as the cab doors. See where to put the USDOT number on a truck.
The USDOT number comes from FMCSA, in the same registration that other carriers use. Our guide how to get a USDOT number walks through the steps. We do not issue numbers.
Under North Carolina General Statute 20-101(b), a truck covered by the intrastate rule displays the USDOT number with NC after it. If your truck is subject to the federal marking rule instead, the federal text requires the name and the USDOT number.
The statute asks for letters at least 3 inches high for the intrastate marking.
This statute applies at over 26,000 pounds GVWR. Other North Carolina or federal rules can apply to a smaller truck, depending on how it is used, so check with the agency.
The statute describes what must be displayed and how big the letters are. If you want confirmation that a decal is accepted, ask the State Highway Patrol or the DMV. Our decals are made from 3M and Oracal vinyl and you choose the size and colors.
