USDOT Decal Sticker
Just the number: your USDOT number in clear lettering. Same 3M/ORACAL vinyl, same 3-year warranty.
FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot lets you look up a USDOT or MC number, or a company name, for free. Here is where to search and how to use what you find.
A USDOT number lookup is free. FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot is available through a one-carrier-at-a-time query at no charge, and you can search by DOT number, MC/MX number or company name. Use it to find your own number, to check a carrier you plan to hire, or to confirm that the name on your truck matches the registration.
There is more than one official place to look. This guide covers each, and what to do with the result.
SAFER Company Snapshot. FMCSA's company lookup. FMCSA says users can search by DOT number, MC/MX number or company name (FMCSA SAFER).
Licensing & Insurance (L&I). This is where operating authority shows up. FMCSA says its carrier search provides information about interstate for-hire carriers that have been granted authority or have applications pending (FMCSA L&I). Use it when you want the MC side of a record.
Motus public search. The new registration system has a public search too. FMCSA says you can search by USDOT number, legal name or DBA to see the registration record (FMCSA).
Downloadable data. If you need many records at once, FMCSA says the public can use Data.Transportation.Gov to download public data on registered entities (FMCSA). Most truck owners will never need this.
Try these in order:
If you have never registered, there is no number to find. See how to get a USDOT number. If you are new to the idea, what is a USDOT number explains it.
Searching by name is handy when you do not have the number. FMCSA lists company name as a search option in SAFER, and legal name or DBA in Motus public search. A few habits help:
We will not describe each field, since FMCSA changes its pages and the labels may differ from what you see. These are the checks that matter:
This is the lookup that matters most before you order lettering. The marking rule asks for the carrier's legal name or a single trade name as listed on its Form MCS-150, and the USDOT number (49 CFR 390.21). FMCSA's summary says the name on the vehicle must match that record (FMCSA highlights).
So:
Our company name guide covers DBAs, leases and rentals. When the text is right, the USDOT Decal Sticker carries the number, and the Custom USDOT Logo adds the name and city.
A lookup is a good first step before you hand a load or a contract to a carrier.
FMCSA's fraud alerts page lists fake look-alike sites for Motus and SAFER. Type the official address yourself or follow the links on this page, and be careful with any site that asks for payment to show you a record that FMCSA shows free.
Check any registration paperwork you saved, or sign in to your Motus account if you made one. If you cannot find it, search your company name in SAFER or Motus public search and confirm the record is yours. Once you see it, copy the number exactly for your decals, because one wrong character makes the lettering wrong.
Yes. FMCSA says SAFER Company Snapshot users can search by DOT number, MC/MX number or company name, and Motus public search accepts the legal name or DBA. Try the legal name first, then any trade name. If you get more than one similar name, confirm the right company by comparing the number on its truck.
FMCSA says the SAFER Company Snapshot is free to use for a one-carrier-at-a-time query. You should not need to pay anyone to look up a single carrier. If a site asks for payment to show you an FMCSA record, check that you are on an official page, because FMCSA warns about look-alike sites.
SAFER Company Snapshot accepts an MC or MX number as well as a DOT number or name. For the operating authority record itself, use FMCSA's Licensing & Insurance search, which covers interstate for-hire carriers that have been granted authority or have applications pending. A carrier with only a USDOT number may not appear there.
Both are official public lookups. SAFER Company Snapshot takes a DOT number, MC/MX number or company name. Motus public search is part of the new registration system and takes a USDOT number, legal name or DBA. If one does not find a company, try the other, and vary the name you type.
