Unladen (Empty) Weight Decal

One line of unladen (empty) weight wording that you type, such as UNLADEN WEIGHT 12,000 LBS, printed on a solid rectangle. This decal is optional wording, not a line we know a rule requires. We did not find a rule that requires an unladen weight on the truck in the states we checked, and we have not confirmed that none exists elsewhere. The figure must come from the truck's own registration, title or a scale ticket. It costs $18.99 per decal, and two matching decals for both doors cost $37.98.

Unladen weight shows up in the rules we read mostly as an exemption. California's name rule does not apply to a motor vehicle with an unladen weight of 6,000 pounds or less, under Vehicle Code 27902. Nevada's rule for private carriers makes an exception for single-unit vehicles with an unladen weight of 10,000 pounds or less, in NAC 706.170. Both are exceptions from carrier name rules. Neither one says a truck must show its empty weight, which is why we describe this decal as optional wording, not a line we know to be required. Take the figure from paperwork before you copy anything. In California, the DMV handbook says the title shows the unladen weight, and the registration card shows either the unladen weight or the declared gross vehicle weight, so read the label on your card. If the paperwork gives you no unladen figure, weigh the truck empty on a scale and keep the printed ticket with its date. Fuel, tools and any added body or rack can change the result, so weigh the truck the way it normally runs without a load.
