New York asks business trucks of 10,001 pounds or more, alone or with a trailer, to carry a USDOT number and the registered name on both sides. Here is how to read that.
NY DOT number requirements start with weight and purpose. NYSDOT says a truck operated for business with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, or a truck and trailer with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds or more, needs a USDOT number, whether it stays in New York or crosses state lines (NYSDOT). Both sides of the truck then carry the legal business name or DBA as it appears on that registration. Most door mistakes happen in the name, so that is where this page spends its time.
NYSDOT's sentence counts a truck and trailer by their combined rating. Here is a worked example with made-up numbers. Hudson Lawn & Garden LLC runs a pickup rated at 7,000 pounds GVWR and a utility trailer rated at 7,000 pounds. Alone, the pickup is under 10,001.
Federal rules let a combination rating be the sum of the power unit's and the towed unit's ratings (49 CFR 390.5T). The pair adds up to 14,000, which is over the line in NYSDOT's wording.
Read each rating from the manufacturer's label or paperwork for that exact vehicle. If your numbers land close to the line, ask NYSDOT instead of guessing.
NYSDOT says the truck must be marked on both sides with the legal business name or DBA as it appears on the USDOT number registration. The federal marking rule says the same thing in other words: the name as listed on the carrier's registration form (49 CFR 390.21). FMCSA's summary adds that the name must match that information (FMCSA).
So the example company's door should read HUDSON LAWN & GARDEN LLC if that is how its registration lists it. Three ways a door drifts away from the record:
The fix is to copy the name from your own record. Our company name on a truck guide covers DBAs, leases and "operated by" wording.
NYSDOT also asks for a contrasting color and lettering readable from 50 feet. Its page includes a lettering-size suggestion, so read it there. Our 12, 18 and 24 inch values are decal widths, not legal sizes.
NYSDOT's page says additional marking requirements apply in New York City. We do not describe them because we did not verify the details. If a truck works in the city, read that part of the NYSDOT page and ask NYSDOT before you order lettering. The page calls these requirements additional, so plan for them to come on top of what is covered here.
New USDOT numbers are applied for in FMCSA's Motus system (FMCSA), and our guide to getting a USDOT number has the steps.
For an NYS DOT number lookup, the USDOT record is public. The SAFER Company Snapshot is free and searches by DOT number, MC or MX number, or company name. FMCSA's Motus public search can find a record by USDOT number, legal name or DBA (FMCSA). Do this before you order and copy the name from the screen.
The Company Name + USDOT decal puts the name over the USDOT number on one rectangle for $27.99 per decal, and the Set of 2 option covers both doors. If the name is already elsewhere on the door, the USDOT Decal Sticker is $18.99 per decal. If you want an MC line too, see the USDOT + MC two-line decal.
Type the name exactly as your record shows it. We print what you type and cannot check it for you. Not sure your truck is covered at all? Start with who needs a USDOT number. Rules change, so confirm your truck's status with NYSDOT before you print anything.
First check NYSDOT's weight test to see whether your truck needs a number. If it does, you register with FMCSA in its Motus system at motus.dot.gov, and our how-to guide lists the steps. Choose the legal name or DBA carefully, because that same name must be on the door. We did not verify a separate New York application for the number itself, so ask NYSDOT.
The USDOT record is federal and free to search. Use the SAFER Company Snapshot by DOT number, MC or MX number or company name, or Motus public search by USDOT number, legal name or DBA. Copy the name exactly as shown before you order, since the door has to match the registration.
The example on NYSDOT's page reads "USDOT 123456" with no state letters after it. We do not add letters you did not type, and if you want certainty, ask NYSDOT. Georgia is different: its rule adds GA for carriers that operate only inside the state, as our Georgia guide explains.
NYSDOT says the marking uses the legal business name or DBA as it appears on the USDOT number registration. So a DBA works when it is on your record. If the name you want on the door is missing from the record, fix the registration first. We did not verify the current process for changing it, so ask FMCSA.
NYSDOT's sentence sets its USDOT number line at 10,001 pounds for business trucks, so a lighter truck is not described by that sentence. Other rules can still apply. Federal rules treat a vehicle used in interstate commerce as a commercial motor vehicle at any weight if it hauls placarded hazardous materials (49 CFR 390.5T). Ask NYSDOT about your case.
