How Long Do Truck Decals Last? An Honest Answer

No seller can honestly promise one lifespan for every truck. Here is what our 3-year guarantee covers, what wears decals out sooner and when to replace one.

How long do truck decals last? It depends on the film, the surface, the weather and how the truck is washed, so no honest seller can give one number that fits every truck. What we can state is our 3-year guarantee: if a Work Decals decal peels or comes off within three years, we send a replacement for free. We do not promise a number of years of life beyond that. What you can control is mostly the install and the care.

What we can promise, and what we cannot

The guarantee covers a decal that peels or comes off. It does not cover misuse, accidents, abrasive cleaning, removal and reapplication, or a number that was typed wrongly (refunds and returns).

It is a promise about what we do if a decal fails. It is not a forecast. A decal on a truck parked in the shade will not live the same life as one on a truck that sits in the sun all day, and we will not pretend otherwise.

How long does vinyl last on a truck?

Film makers publish a durability figure on the data sheet for each film, measured under stated test conditions. A truck is not a test panel. It is washed, bumped, driven in every kind of weather and parked wherever the work is. Treat a published figure as a way to compare films, not as a forecast for your door. Our guide to choosing vinyl for vehicle lettering lists what to ask a seller.

What shortens a decal's life

A dirty, waxed or polished surface

Adhesive can only hold what it touches. Our installation page asks for a door that is washed, completely dry and free of wax or polish. A film of wax or road grime under the decal is the weak spot that lets an edge lift later.

Sun and heat, day after day

A truck that sits outdoors takes sun every day. Old decals that have baked in the sun can crack and come off in pieces, a point our removal guide makes. We cannot give you a heat limit. Parking in the shade when you can is free advice.

Installing in heat or cold

Our install checklist says to work in the shade, in mild temperatures, if you can. A hot panel in direct sun can make a decal grab too fast. We do not publish exact temperature limits, so use the instruction sheet in your package as the guide.

Rough, ribbed or riveted surfaces

A decal needs a flat stretch to lie flat. Ribs, rivets, seams and handles can keep it from lying flat, and a spot that does not lie flat has less adhesive touching the surface. That is why the install guide tells you to pick a flat area.

Pressure washers and hard scrubbing

A strong jet aimed straight at a decal edge can lift a corner. Abrasive cleaners and hard scrubbing are listed as outside the guarantee. Both are easy to avoid.

Moving a decal after it is on

A decal is not made to be peeled off and put somewhere else. Removal and reapplication is not covered by the guarantee.

What to do on install day

  1. Wash the door, let it dry fully and make sure no wax or polish is left.
  2. Mark the spot with masking tape so you press it down once, in the right place.
  3. Work in the shade, in mild temperatures if you can.
  4. Squeegee from the middle out, then press the edges once more.

The video on the install page shows each step, and the guide above adds the common mistakes.

Your instruction sheet may give a waiting period before the first wash. Follow it. We do not publish a number here, because the sheet in your package is the final word.

Care after install

  • Wash the truck gently. Skip abrasive cleaners and hard scrubbing.
  • Keep a pressure washer's spray from hitting a decal edge head-on.
  • Look at each decal when you wash: corners, edges, bubbles, cracks and fading.
  • Now and then, stand 50 feet away and read it. The marking rule asks for lettering that can be read from 50 feet in daylight with the vehicle stopped, and that stays legible (49 CFR 390.21). Our USDOT number display rules page has the summary.

When to replace a decal

It peels or comes off within three years. Email info@workdecals.com or use the contact form with your order number and a photo, and we send a replacement for free. Do not peel it off and reapply it first, since removal and reapplication is excluded.

It has faded, cracked or gotten too dirty to read from 50 feet. The marking rule asks that the lettering be kept legible, so replace it. Our guarantee wording covers peeling and coming off and does not name fading, so write to us and ask instead of assuming.

You are swapping an old decal for a new one. Take the old one off properly, clear the glue and wash the door first, as in our removal guide. Do the swap in one session so neither side of the truck is left unmarked.

When it is time, the USDOT Decal Sticker, the USDOT + MC Two-Line Decal and the Custom USDOT Logo are made to order. For what a replacement costs, see truck lettering cost.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 3-year guarantee mean my decal will last exactly three years?

No. It means that if a decal peels or comes off within three years, we replace it for free. That is a promise about what we do, not a prediction of how long your decal will look good. Some will outlast it and some will not. Sun, surface, install and washing all play a part, so we give no number of years.

How long should I wait before washing a new decal?

Follow the instruction sheet in your package, which may give a waiting period before the first wash. We do not publish a number on this site. When you do wash, go gently: no abrasive cleaners, no hard scrubbing, and keep a pressure washer's spray off the edges. Questions can go to info@workdecals.com.

Will a pressure washer ruin my truck decals?

Not automatically, but a strong jet aimed straight at an edge can lift a corner, so keep the spray off the edges. We do not publish a safe pressure or distance. If a corner does lift, take a photo and contact us before you try to fix it, since removal and reapplication is not covered.

How do I know when it is time to replace a truck decal?

Replace it when it peels, comes off, cracks, or fades or gets dirty enough that you cannot read it from 50 feet in daylight. The marking rule asks that the lettering be kept legible. A quick look at every decal each time you wash the truck catches most problems early.

What if my decal fades before three years?

Our guarantee wording covers a decal that peels or comes off, and it does not name fading. Email info@workdecals.com with your order number and a photo and ask. We will reply with the next step. Meanwhile, wash gently and keep a pressure washer's spray off the edges, so the decal is not stressed further.
