USDOT Decal Sticker
Just the number: your USDOT number in clear lettering. Same 3M/ORACAL vinyl, same 3-year warranty.
Reflective film sends light back toward its source, so lettering can show up at night. Here is what it does, what it does not do, and what it adds to the price.
Reflective truck lettering is printed on film that sends light back toward its source, so a truck's name and number can show up in headlights at night. It is an option on our lettering decals and costs more than standard vinyl. It is not required, because the federal marking rule does not name a material.
Reflective film, also called retroreflective film, is built to return light along the path it came from. Headlights are the usual source, so more of their light comes back toward the driver than a standard printed surface would return. One manufacturer describes this in its published datasheet for a fleet-grade film as a safety mechanism when headlights and streetlights bounce off the film. That datasheet covers a different product, so read it as an example, not our specification.
Reflective lettering may help people see the truck and read its number when light falls on it in the dark. Situations where that could matter:
We cannot measure how much it will help your truck, and it does not make a truck visible in every condition.
Lighter colors reflect more light. In the same manufacturer's datasheet, the minimum reflection values for its fleet-grade film, measured at a fixed test angle, run: white 70, yellow 50, orange 25, red 14, green 9, blue 4, brown 1, in candela per lux per square meter. Black is not on that list, and dark printed colors reflect very little. These figures belong to that film, not ours, but the pattern is the useful part: if night reading matters most, a white or yellow sticker background will look brighter in headlights than a red or blue one.
Reflective film is an option on lettering decals. The whole decal is printed on reflective film, not a strip of it, and every sticker and lettering color we offer can be had on reflective film. The upcharge is per decal and depends on the width and the number of lines:
The optional contour cut is still +$5 per decal if you add it. You can pick reflective film in the door builder or on a lettering product page.
Two worked examples, both per decal and then for a set of two (one for each door):
Neither order reaches $99, so the flat $7.99 shipping applies to both. Orders of $99 or more ship free, counted before discounts. A Custom USDOT Logo is a separate design product, so check its product page for the options it offers.
Reflective decals go on the same way as standard ones, with tape marks, a tape hinge and a squeegee from the middle out, as in our install guide for truck door decals. Two differences matter:
The steps match our door decal installation guide, kept dry and in warmer weather.
The base price is explained in our truck lettering cost guide, and our vinyl guide covers standard films.
No. The federal marking rule, 49 CFR 390.21, asks for the legal name or a single trade name and the USDOT number on both sides, in letters that contrast sharply with the background and can be read from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stopped. It does not name a reflective material. Reflective film is a choice you make for night visibility. State rules can differ, so confirm with your state agency before you assume anything applies to your truck.
No. Reflective film does not change what the rule asks for, so it cannot fix a marking that is missing the name, the number or the USDOT prefix. A wrong number on reflective film is still a wrong number. Check the number on FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot, which is free to search by USDOT number, MC number or company name, before you order.
No. Conspicuity tape is a separate product with its own rules, and it is used on trailers. Our reflective option is printed lettering on a decal, the same product as our standard lettering decals, just printed on reflective film. Do not use one in place of the other without checking the rules for the vehicle.
It is added per decal, so a set of two for both doors pays it twice. A 12 inch decal with one or two lines adds $5 per decal, or $10 for a pair. The builder shows the exact total for your lines, width and background before you order.
Wait for warmer weather if you can. Apply reflective film at 60°F or warmer, in the shade, on a clean dry panel, following your instruction sheet. Below that temperature the film stiffens and may not stick well, and a stiff decal is harder to lay flat on a rounded or ribbed door. If you must install in cold weather, send us a question through the contact form first.
Yes. Lighter sticker colors return more light than darker ones, as the example figures in the color section show. We do not publish a brightness figure for our decals. If night reading is the priority, choose a lighter background, such as white or yellow, with dark lettering.
