About this decal

A decal with one line on it: your California CA number, the carrier identification number the California Highway Patrol issues to motor carriers. Type it the way you want it to read, such as CA 512345, choose a width and colors, and check the live preview on a truck door. It prints as a solid rectangle in the background color you pick, made from 3M or Oracal vinyl.

In California, the CA number is issued by the California Highway Patrol, and the DMV uses it as the Motor Carrier Permit number. California requires a carrier that must hold a Motor Carrier Permit to display its CA number on its vehicles, and the carrier may display a valid USDOT, PUC or Cal-T number in its place, as the CHP's FAQ explains. Caltrans says the number goes on both sides of each covered vehicle, or on both sides of at least one vehicle in a combination.

Copy the number from your CHP or DMV permit paperwork rather than from memory, and use CA 512345 from the builder as the pattern. The usual slip is typing a USDOT or MC number on this line, and each of those has its own decal. We print exactly what you enter, and a wrongly typed number is not covered by the guarantee, so read the preview twice before you pay.

The decal comes in 12, 18 or 24 inch widths, with six background colors and four lettering colors to choose from. Order two to put one on each door. Install is DIY: a printed instruction sheet and a link to the install video come in the package, and the 3-year guarantee covers a free replacement if the decal peels or comes off. Rules change, and you are responsible for checking your own requirements with the CHP.

Questions about this decal

What is a CA number on a truck?

It is California's carrier identification number, issued by the California Highway Patrol. The DMV uses the same number as the Motor Carrier Permit number. The CHP's FAQ lists the order: a carrier first gets a USDOT number from FMCSA, then a CA number from the CHP, then the permit from the DMV. This decal only prints the number you already have. We do not issue or register it.

Can I show my USDOT number instead of the CA number?

The CHP says a motor carrier of property may display a valid USDOT, PUC or Cal-T number in place of the CA number, and that an interstate carrier must display a USDOT number. So a truck that already carries USDOT lettering may not need a separate CA line. Ask the CHP what applies to your operation before you spend money on extra decals.

Which trucks fall under the California carrier permit?

California's Motor Carrier Permit program covers motortrucks with two or more axles and a GVWR over 10,000 pounds, and any vehicle used to haul property for compensation. Carriers that operate only in interstate commerce are not subject to it. The CHP's FAQ gives the full definitions, including towing combinations. If you are unsure, ask the DMV about motor carrier permits.

How wide should my CA number decal be?

The 12, 18 and 24 inch options are decal widths, not a legal letter size, and we are not quoting a California size rule here. Pick the width that fits your door with the lettering large and sharp against its background, and judge it in the live preview. If you want a ruling on size or placement, ask the CHP directly.

Can I get my CA number on the same decal as my USDOT and MC numbers?

Yes. The USDOT, MC, CA and GVW four-line decal stacks all four lines for $22.99. In the builder, the third line takes a CA number, or a KYU, TXDOT or VIN line if you need one of those instead. If your door already has USDOT lettering, this single-line CA decal is the lower-cost add-on.
