The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet describes KYU as a tax license for carriers traveling Kentucky roadways with a combined license weight greater than 59,999 pounds. Because it is a tax license, it is a different thing from a USDOT number. We are not telling you whether or how Kentucky wants a KYU number shown on a vehicle. That is a question for the Cabinet, and its rules can change.

What is a KYU number?
KYU is a Kentucky weight-distance tax license. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet issues it for carriers traveling Kentucky roadways with a combined license weight greater than 59,999 pounds, and it says farm-plate vehicles are exempt from the KYU tax. Numbers are issued after the online KYU application is completed. This decal only prints a number you already hold.
Does a KYU number have to be on the truck?
We will not guess at this one. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet administers KYU, so its Division of Motor Carriers is the place to ask how it wants the number handled on your vehicle, and the answer can change over time. Is a KYU number the same as a USDOT number?
No. KYU is a tax license, while a USDOT number identifies a carrier in the federal safety registration. The Cabinet says carriers running vehicles of 10,001 pounds GVWR or more in Kentucky need a USDOT number and must display it, so a KYU decal never replaces your USDOT decal. What does combined license weight mean for KYU?
On the Cabinet's carrier page, combined license weight is the greater of two figures for the registration period: the declared combined maximum gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit, or the highest actual combined gross weight on Kentucky highways. Its weight table lists the KYU license for 60,000 to 80,000 pounds. Ask the Cabinet how your own figure is set.
Can I put KYU on a decal with my other numbers?
Yes. The USDOT, MC, CA and GVW four-line decal has a line that takes a KYU number in the builder in place of a CA number. With the USDOT line on top, that is $22.99 on one decal. If all you need is the KYU line, this single-line decal is $12.99.
