About this decal

A decal with a single line: your MC number, the operating authority or docket number FMCSA gives for-hire carriers. Type it the way you want it to read, such as MC 890123, choose a width and colors, and check the live preview on a truck door. Many carriers add an MC number next to their USDOT lettering, even though the federal marking rule does not ask for it.

FMCSA says that no federal marking requirement exists for displaying an MC number on a truck, and that the USDOT number is the required identifier. The marking rule, 49 CFR 390.21, also allows other identifying information on the vehicle as long as it is not inconsistent with the required name and USDOT number. So an MC decal is allowed and common. It is not required, and it never replaces the USDOT decal.

FMCSA calls the MC number interstate operating authority, or a docket number, and says it is often labeled MC, FF or MX depending on the authority granted. Anyone can look a carrier up by MC number on the SAFER Company Snapshot, so a number on the door is easy to check. Type yours exactly as FMCSA shows it.

Choose 12, 18 or 24 inches of width and any background and lettering colors from the builder, and order two for both doors. To carry both numbers, the USDOT + MC two-line decal is $16.99, and the Custom USDOT Logo at $26 adds your company name and city. DIY install, and a 3-year guarantee if it peels.

Questions about this decal

Is an MC number the same as a USDOT number?

No. The USDOT number is the safety identifier used on trucks. The MC number is operating authority, which FMCSA says is needed in addition to a USDOT number by carriers that haul regulated cargo or passengers for a fee. A for-hire carrier can have both. The FMCSA operating authority page explains the difference, and our MC vs USDOT guide goes step by step.

Who needs an MC number, and does a box truck?

In general, companies that move passengers, or federally regulated commodities owned by others, for a fee in interstate commerce need operating authority. Private carriers hauling their own cargo do not, and neither do for-hire carriers hauling only exempt commodities or working exclusively inside a federally designated commercial zone, per FMCSA. A box truck follows the same test: what you haul, for whom, and across state lines or not.

Where should the MC number go on the door?

The federal rule does not say, because it does not require the number at all. A common layout is the MC line directly under the USDOT line in the same colors, so the door reads as one block. Keep the USDOT lettering the easy-to-read part, since that is the one the marking rule asks for. Our guide to MC numbers on trucks covers layouts.

What if my number starts with FF or MX instead of MC?

FMCSA says docket numbers are often labeled MC, FF or MX depending on the type of authority granted. Type yours exactly as it appears on your FMCSA record, letters and digits, because we print what you enter. If you are not sure, look the company up on SAFER by name or USDOT number, and read the preview before you pay.

Will MC numbers go away soon?

FMCSA's April 2026 notice about its new registration system, Motus, said the next phase would not include eliminating MC and freight forwarder docket numbers, so MC numbers still exist. Systems and rules change, so check FMCSA's notice and its website before you order a decal for a new authority.
