About this decal

Two lines of weight on one decal: a GVW line over a TARE line, set up in the builder as GVW 26000 and TARE 12000. Enter your own figures in pounds and the live preview shows how the two lines sit on a door. The solid rectangle comes in the background color you pick, in 3M or Oracal vinyl, and suits a door, a box side or a trailer. The numbers are the ones you type.

Tare is the weight of the empty vehicle, before any cargo is loaded. GVW and GVWR are the other half of the pair: the federal rules define GVWR as the value specified by the manufacturer as the maximum loaded weight of a single motor vehicle. Put together, the two lines show what the vehicle weighs empty and the most it is rated to weigh loaded. The gap between them is only a rough guide to how much it can carry.

You are responsible for the figures. Take the rating from the manufacturer's label or your registration, and the empty weight from your paperwork or a weigh ticket. The only weight displays we could verify are New Jersey's GVWR display for heavier commercial vehicles (NJ MVC) and California's DMV weight decals (DMV handbook). For any other state, ask the agency that handles commercial vehicles.

Each line holds up to 24 characters, so GVW 26000 and TARE 12000 fit with room to spare. Type both lines in the same style, with digits and no commas. It is $22.99 whichever width you pick, and each decal is one piece, so order two for both sides. The 3-year guarantee covers a decal that peels. For a rating alone, the GVW decal is $18.99, and our weight sticker guide explains the labels in more detail.

Questions about this decal

What does tare weight mean on a truck decal?

Tare is the weight of the empty vehicle, with no cargo on board. Details such as whether fuel, equipment and the driver are counted depend on who set the figure, so use the number from your own paperwork or weigh ticket. If an agency asks for a particular kind of empty weight, ask it how that figure is defined before you order, because the decal prints whatever you type.

What is the difference between GVW and GVWR?

GVWR is a rating: the manufacturer's maximum loaded weight for a single vehicle, usually found on the label. The first line of this decal is free text, so type GVWR 26000 instead of GVW 26000 if that is the term on your registration or label. Using your paperwork's own term keeps the decal consistent with the documents an inspector may ask to see.

How do I find the tare weight of my truck?

Start with your paperwork, since a title or registration may list an empty weight. The California DMV handbook, for example, describes its title as showing the unladen weight. Otherwise, weigh the empty vehicle on a public scale and keep the ticket. Fuel level and added racks change the result, so weigh it set up the way it normally runs.

Do New Jersey or California require a weight decal?

New Jersey requires commercial motor vehicles of 26,001 pounds GVWR or more that are registered or principally garaged there to display the GVWR, with its own lettering size, per the NJ MVC. California commercial vehicles registered under its weight program must show the DMV's own weight decals on both sides. This decal does not replace those. For other states, ask your agency.

Who checks that the numbers on the decal are right?

You do. We print the two lines exactly as typed and cannot verify a weight, and the guarantee does not cover a mistyped figure. New Jersey's statute text, for one, makes it punishable to knowingly display a lower GVWR than the actual rating. Copy the ratings carefully, and for a matched pair with a unit number, see the Trailer / Unit Number pair.

I had quite a few questions before ordering, all of which were answered promptly on a Sunday, which I was so thankful for. My order arrived much earlier than expected and the quality is amazing! I will definitely be ordering again in the future.

They were super easy to work with and even did a custom decal order for me that shipped with my truck decals. The designs were made to order and adjustments were made as requested. Great response times as well. Extremely pleased with my order!
