Moving Truck Decals: Name, USDOT and Unit Numbers

Moving truck decals for box trucks and trailers: company name, USDOT and MC lines, unit numbers and a height decal, matched across every truck you run.

Moving truck decals do three jobs: show the company name customers look for, carry the name and USDOT number lines the federal rule asks for (49 CFR 390.21), and tag each truck with a unit number so crews and dispatch can tell them apart. MC is optional on the door (FMCSA). Keep one layout across every box truck and trailer, and the fleet reads as one company.

Name, USDOT and MC on the cab door

For a covered truck, the rule asks for the carrier's name and USDOT number on both sides, in letters that contrast sharply and read from 50 feet in daylight while stopped. It does not say where on the side the marking goes, so a cab door is a natural spot and the big box side stays free for a logo or phone number. See the display rules.

Want a logo? The sample for Rally Ribbon Script carries a built-in trade line that reads Moving Services, and Starline Brush Script is described as a friendly look for a small carrier, courier or mover. Both are $120 per door.

Unit numbers across the fleet

A unit number lets a customer service rep say "Truck 6 is on the way" and lets a crew find the right truck in the yard. The Trailer / Unit Number pair is $18.99 and is sized for trailers and box trucks, with a GVWR line. Use one format on every unit, keep one master list, and match the number on a truck to the trailer you pair it with. Our unit number guide has more.

For a consistent look, hold the width, lettering color and sticker background steady, and tape the same spot on every cab door before you stick anything.

A height decal for box trucks

The Box Truck Height Decal is $12.99. Enter the height you measured for that truck, including anything mounted on the roof, so a driver approaching a low bridge or garage entrance has the figure in view. Treat it as a driver aid. This page does not claim any rule requires it.

Registration, rentals and your state

Registration is a separate step from lettering. In Texas, for example, state law says a carrier may not operate any vehicle, regardless of size, to move household goods for compensation unless it is registered with the state (Texas Transportation Code ch. 643). Other states have their own rules, so use our state requirements guide and your state agency.

Peak-season rentals follow their own rule. For a rental of 30 calendar days or less, the truck may carry the rental company's name and USDOT number if the rental agreement has the required details (49 CFR 390.21). Ask the rental company before you put your own decals on one.

Frequently asked questions

Do moving trucks need a USDOT number?

It depends on weight and use. A box truck rated 10,001 pounds or more used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle (49 CFR 390.5T), and states set their own lines for moves that stay inside the state. Our box truck guide works through the tests.

Can I put my phone number and website on the truck?

Yes. The marking rule allows other identifying information as long as it is not inconsistent with the required name and USDOT number. Keep the required lines the most readable part of the decal and treat a phone or web line as secondary. The Make-Your-Own 5-Line decal has a spare line for it.

Should every truck in a moving fleet have identical decals?

Same layout, different unit number. Keep the company name lines, widths and colors identical so the trucks look like one company, and change only the number from truck to truck. If you add a truck later, reuse the same settings so it matches the rest.

Do I need a height decal on a box truck?

The federal marking rule asks for your name and USDOT number, not a height. A height decal is something you add for your drivers. If your state, a customer or a building asks for one, follow them. The decal itself is $12.99 each.
