A two-line decal for a California truck: USDOT on top and your CA number on the line below, printed as one solid rectangle. The CA number is the carrier identification number the California Highway Patrol issues, and the DMV uses it as the Motor Carrier Permit number. This product is for carriers that show a USDOT number and a CA number but no MC line. Type both numbers and preview the pair on a truck door before you order.
California has its own order of steps, and the CHP sets it out. The CHP's FAQ lists a USDOT number from FMCSA first, then the CA number from the CHP, then the Motor Carrier Permit from the DMV. The CHP also says a motor carrier of property may display a valid USDOT, PUC or Cal-T number in place of the CA number, and that an interstate carrier must display a USDOT number. Putting both numbers on one decal is therefore a choice about what the truck shows, and the statute and the CHP's FAQ decide what each truck needs. For placement, the Caltrans CA number page says the number goes on both sides of each covered vehicle.
Keep the CA number apart from the DMV's weight decal, because the two are easy to mix up. Commercial vehicles registered under the Commercial Vehicle Registration Act with a declared weight of 10,001 pounds or more get DMV weight decals, and California requires those decals on the right and left sides of the vehicle. The state issues that decal, and it shows the declared weight. Our decal prints a number you already hold, so it does not stand in for the DMV decal. For a weight line on a decal, see the weight stickers guide.
Start with USDOT and your federal digits on the first line, then CA and your CA number on the second. The builder sample is USDOT 1234567 over CA 512345, and each line takes up to 24 characters. The California statute does not set a letter height in inches and does not require a CA prefix, so the CA label is there for readers. Pick a width of 12, 18 or 24 inches, a background from six colors (White, Black, Yellow, Silver, Red or Blue), and lettering in Black, White, Red or Blue. The decal is $22.99, or $45.98 for a Set of 2, one for each door. An optional Contour cut adds $5 per decal and cuts each line close around its own lettering as its own piece. A tracking email arrives one to two days after the order, and the printed sheet and install video come in the box.
Shipping is $7.99 per order, free over $99, with tracking by email one or two days after you order. Install is DIY with a printed sheet and video link in the box. A 3-year guarantee covers a free replacement if it peels or comes off. Details: shipping, install, refunds and returns.
Two lines, and both are required on this product. The top line is USDOT followed by your USDOT number, the form the federal marking rule describes. The second line is CA followed by your CA number. The builder sample is USDOT 1234567 over CA 512345. There is no name, city or phone line on this decal, so a truck that needs its name shown needs a separate decal for it. The price is $22.99 per decal.
The CHP says a motor carrier of property may display a valid USDOT, PUC or Cal-T number in place of the CA number. The statute on the CA number also says the both-sides CA rule does not apply to a vehicle that displays a valid USDOT number. Read together, those points make a two-line decal one way to show both numbers, not a requirement. Confirm which numbers your truck shows with the CHP before you order.
California's permit program covers motortrucks with two or more axles and a GVWR over 10,000 pounds, plus any vehicle used to haul property for compensation. The DMV describes the weight threshold as 10,001 pounds or more, and says anyone paid to haul property needs a permit whatever the vehicle's size or type. Carriers that operate only in interstate commerce are not subject to the program. Check the DMV's motor carrier permit page before you add a CA line, because the answer depends on how each truck is used.
No name prints here. California's company name rule, Vehicle Code 27900, asks for the operator's name or trademark on both sides of several classes of commercial vehicles, including vehicles carrying property for hire, and the letters must be readable from 50 feet. The federal rule asks for the legal name too. The Company Name + USDOT Decal prints both for $27.99, and the Company Name Decal prints the name alone for $18.99. Our company name guide covers the rules.
The CHP issues the CA number on its Motor Carrier Profile, form CHP 362, and the DMV issues the permit on form MC 706 M. The CHP's FAQ lists the order: a USDOT number from FMCSA first, then the CA number, then the permit. You apply for the USDOT number in Motus. We do not issue or look up these numbers, so copy them from your own paperwork. The CA number guide has more.
